Today we are going to Volendam, Holland and to Edam Holland. This is an exciting trip for couples. As always the first thing we see when in Holland is the windmills and the next thing is the architecture. Volendam is a little sea side village.  Wonderful, the houses are just as cute as can be.

You feel you are in another world. A little fairytale world it’s a great place to go. The harbor there with the boats says that you are in a fishing village. Fishing is a way of life. You may have seen that you take your picture with a fisherman statue. This is a very touristy thing to do but go ahead and do it anyway. It is amazing you go home with the pictures. It shows that you were there. Of course then there is the fisherman’s wife waiting for her husband and boys to come home from their fishing trip. Always and adventure always a risk but it was a way of life.

They now have shopping that runs the full length of the boardwalk. There are so many fun shops and things there, just people watching is fun.

The architecture is just amazing. One of the things we fell in love with was the waffles. They come with everything you can imagine one them all kinds of flavors, very good.  They are on little street stands. You see them all over Europe. This one had an especially large variety. On the little stands it says poffertjes. It took me a little while to say that, poffertjes I had to go to the internet to learn how to say that. What an awesome thing to have a little waffle. It’s a treat. We had ours with apple cinnamon in the center.

They use pearl sugar. It almost tastes like icing is inside the waffles. It is more of a dessert waffle than a breakfast and they are served all day. They have them with strawberries on them and  M&M’s on them, chocolate coated and Chocolate ones.

Make sure when you go to another country one of the things you do together is to experience something new together. So find a food that is especially fun, something that you think aah we ought to try that and try it. I mean you’re only going to be there once maybe twice so try the treats. Spend a little money and have a few calories but experience the place you are visiting. It would be too bad to go home and not really experience it. If you don’t try the food especially from the little side stands you really haven’t been there.

One of our favorite – we always eat Fries and Ice Cream or as my husband says Ice Cream and Freetz. You can see the little French fry stand here. The French fries come in a cone a paper cone. When they serve you French fries they come in a paper cone. It is really fun and you eat them with mayonnaise. Their mayonnaise is just totally different than from where we come from. It has a great taste to it.

One of the other stands we went by was the meat stand. It had everything from sandwiches made up to something that they are famous for there but kind of grosses me out but it’s a tradition there and that is their herring. They put it into the little stands and people eat it. It is like a national tradition. When my husband was living there that was one of the things that he did. I think it was more on a dare than anything. Herring is a little fish. They take the heads off and clean them out and then here they are in the little stand for sale. You can get them in restaurants or in the stands. They have a particularly interesting way of eating them. They grab them by the tail between their thumb and forefinger, slather them in raw onions, bend their head back, put the fish in their mouth and eat it raw.

I found a guy in the street that was enjoying his treat and just loved it and agreed show me how it was done. also a lady showed me. Mmm – ooooh yuk. I am glad that he enjoyed it and glad that he would show me but I couldn’t do it.

They have fish and chips, a famous food. You can find them along the water front. You can find them here in Volendam. Fish and Chips is especially a treat when it is fresh. It tastes wonderful. You should fish and chips when you are in a town that is on the water.

Then there was the shopping. There were shops everywhere piled with souvenirs clear out into the the streets. They had everything from Delft Blue to slippers to just any thing you can imagine in the way of a souvenir.

We love to shop. We bring home something to the people that we know and love at home to share with them our experience. They are also reminders to us of the places we’ve been.

We ran across this little photography shop and it was really interesting because years ago my husband said when he lived there that him and his friends had come to this little photography shop that lets you dress up in the traditional costumes and stand out by the harbor and have you picture taken and here it is. It is still there. That was a fun memory to see this little Photoshop where the photos had been taken of him many years ago.

Finding restrooms is sometimes kind of a problem when you are traveling in Europe so be sure to ask if you see one and if it available use it! Most of the time there is a fee it is usually a small fee but watch out for toilets/bathrooms where ever you go.

Volendam is a little sea side city. It has all kinds of shopping and restaurants and its right next to the sea shore. There are places that you can dress up and have your picture taken in traditional costume. They wrap everything you buy. I went absolutely nuts. We had no idea how we were going to get everything we bought home. But we had so much fun They so many fun neat things here. This is a great place to go shopping. We love the shops, the ships, and the restaurants. Volendam was an awesome stop.

We were walking back to our car and the street was blocked off by what we thought was a parade. They had the little community band there and they were playing and then they had people come marching down the street and they were playing drums. I loved the drums. The sound went right through you. it ended up being a funeral for a mayor. It was quite an experience to sit with the people and watch their local customs. What an awesome thing to attend just to get a feeling for their culture. It was a beautiful ceremony.

Edam was our next place we visited. It’s a small town, very cute, small little winding canals and narrow little streets with beautiful houses. We stayed at the Hotel Fortuna it was fabulous. Cute little place with a fabulous breakfast. A lot of history is packed in this country.

It’s fun to come and enjoy such a romantic place and go eat at nice restaurants and just enjoy the quiet ambiance.  This is a fabulous place in Holland. Be sure to visit Edam!

We loved the lovely little Hotel Fortuna. It had a gorgeous restaurant. It was in the cutest area of town I just loved that it had a lovely little river that ran right along side of it. It had little seating areas and it had flowers of course. You could sit and look out on the little canal It had great ambiance. It was just wonderful. What a great way to spend your time. Your down time while you are resting. Even in the evening it was lit up. They fly their flag everywhere. It makes for a reminder of country pride.

The rooms were wonderful. They had great beds in them. Ours was a triple so it had an extra bed in it. That was really cool. It had a little sink out outside the bathroom while someone was else was in the restroom which was awesome. It was all tiled and it was supremely clean. It was one of the nice hotels that we have stayed in. It was very comfortable and it also had a fridge with was all stocked and it had a coffee maker.

We would sit out by the canal and watch the boats. Then we walked around the town mostly to see the architecture. We went by the church and the bells were ringing it was just cute. The cows were out in the fields next to the canal. The canals run along through the city making for wonderful reflective photos.

We ate in a little pub. Yes, that is what you should do; eat at a little pub while you are there. They are just fabulous! They are not just a bar. They have great food and fabulous wonderful friendly people. We ate there and that was just really great. We continued on our walk thru the town. We stayed there a couple of days. We enjoyed Edam very much. It would be a good place to spend more time especially as you could spend more time just investigating the town and shopping and trying their wonderful food.

I love doors. They had great doors in Holland. I thought the little ringer was fascinating. It is a little knob they have that you pull and it rings the bell. It looks like a small door knob. What fun differences there are. What fun things there are to see.

Our Hotel Fortuna had a fabulous breakfast that was included. It had everything you could imagine. It had the normal Holland breakfast, breads, cheeses, eggs, and all kinds of stuff. Then to complete the breakfast they made the most wonderful cup of hot chocolate. I am a hot chocolate person. It was just so fun to have this nice big steaming cup of hot chocolate It was a big one too.

What an awesome place to go. It was really a great place to go; another adventure and another place to explore. Experience Holland.
