Do Boomers Still Go Camping

Camping really??? My idea of camping is staying in a cabin at the very least. I love roasting hot dogs and marshmallows then heading indoors about the time the mosquitoes start biting.

We went camping when we were first married. It was all really fun until it got dark and we got in the tent. Then I just knew there were things moving around in the dark outside and I didn’t trust the tent material to protect us. I felt like bait. I jumped and said “what was that” every couple minutes. I was terrified. About 2 o’clock in the morning my husband gave up, packed up and we went home. I think we only went camping in a tent a couple of times after that.

afraid of camping in a tent

We did have a camp trailer for a while too. Because let’s face it was the cheapest way to take a family vacation with kids. It was better in a camp trailer but still I didn’t sleep much. I can’t believe the things I did for my kids to have great experiences.

I also have to agree with my husband that being out in the beauty of nature it is really soul filling. The funny thing my kids like to go camping. But for me I can’t do the tent camping.

What funny experiences have you had?

A Strange Tropical Travel Bucket List Item

A tropical vacation home but not just any tropical home purchase. I know exactly what I am looking for I just can’t find it. Some day I will have one of those deja vu moments. We love to go stay on a beach for our main vacations but I am always searching…..

In my dreams I have a vision of a beautiful tropical place where we buy a house on the beach. The back of the house faces the ocean although there is a long  island in the middle of a smallish bay before the open ocean. The water is deep enough to boat between the main land and the island. It is close but not close enough to swim to. It has great snorkeling right off our dock. It is not heavily populated in that area. There is one small resort with a store down the road quite a ways. The house needs lots of work but is in an ideal location. It is so beautiful there. Just the place for us to retire on a beach, at least part time.

I know it is just a dream but every once in a while I will look at maps to see if I can find it. Maybe I just watch too much episodes of “House Hunters International.” Whatever the case may be it too is on my bucket list. If you have been somewhere like I described please help me by sending me the location to look at. If I find a photo similar too it I will also post it. Dreams…..

Does anyone else dream of having a house on the beach??

5 Life Lesson Books Worth Reading

I love reading books. Books and vacations just go together for me. Most of the time nowadays I read off my digital device as I can carry a lot of books in a small light device. I do like my kindle (I have the old one) with the white screen to read out on the beach. The sun reflection is a real problem off my phone. I think that it is essential to keep learning. I love books that teach life and business skills. I thought I would share some of them with you. You can get them through these links to Amazon through my affiliate link. I hope you will share with me how these books affect you after you read them. In another post I will list my current favorite list of fiction that I am reading.

1. Notes From A Friend by Anthony Robbins
This book is great for all ages. It has skills that when incorporated in your life increases your likeability and success in all area of your life. It is an easy to read and understand book.

2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
This little book has so many great life lessons in it. It will teach you at the depth of understanding that you have. Read it again and it teaches you more.

3. The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews

This really made me think about the choices that I make. Sometimes it even scared me.

4. Rhinoceros Success by Scott Alexander

I have Rhino of all sorts all over my house. We were given this book by the first millionaire that we spent time with as a gift. He believed this book held success secrets that could help us. I love the lessons in this book. From this we made the Rhino our family mascot.

5. Single Shard by Linda Sue Park

Easy jr. high level reading book that has powerful life lessons in it. I read this when I was making pottery but found there was so much more to it. All kids – and adults – should read this book.

I read a lot of different types of books but life lesson books are at the top of my list. I like small easy to read books that I can read in a day or two. I don’t have the attention span for thick month long books. I hope you enjoy these books. I would love to hear your experiences with them.

Jelly Fish Stings – Ouch! Avoid Them

While out snorkeling on two different occasions I have swam into stingers. Once we were snorkeling from a boat and I saw these beautiful white floaty things in the water around me. I was so enchanted by their movement. Little did I know that these Beautiful creatures carried such an outcome of pain. I soon learned what a horrible experience it is to be stung. I had red welts on my arms and my legs. I would say it felt like bee stings. As soon as I got on the boat the tour guide put vinegar on them and shaved the area with a credit card. He said that the vinegar stops the sting from spreading toxin. The credit card would remove the stingers. He told me not to touch them as it would activate the stings to release the toxins. I was lucky that I didn’t have a bad reaction to them although they hurt like crazy and itched for days. They had me put hydrocortizone ointment on and take Benadryl. For me Ibuprofen and vinegar worked the best for me. It is not an experience I wish to repeat. But last spring while I was snorkeling I started to feel this stinging sensation down the front of my swimming suit and on my stomach where the little sea nettles had gotten caught in my swim suit. It wasn’t as bad as the Jelly Fish but it still stung and bothered me for a couple days. I went directly to the kitchen at the resort and asked them for some vinegar which they were kind enough to give me to put on the welts. I felt an immediate difference. It still took a while to go away but the vinegar and Ibuprofen really helped.

I later talked with a snorkeling tour guide that said I should wear a t-shirt, wetsuit or nylons on my legs and arms to avoid jelly fish. The jelly fish sting when they come in contact with bare skin. So anything that keeps that from happening will help. Some jelly fish have small enough stingers that even the nylon will prevent the stings. When I go snorkeling again especially if I know there are jelly fish in the area or it is the season when they would be in the area I would definitely do what ever I can to avoid these stings. Remember some stings are serious and should be seen by medical professionals.
