Welcome to Scatter Travel I am Debbie Gerber. In front of the entrance to Maduradam is the little boy who stuck his finger in the dyke to save Holland. I remember this story by Mary Mapes Dodge. It was a story when I grew up call Hans Brinker and The Silver Skates.

Maduradam Park is a little miniature of Holland. Everything in Holland here are 1:25 scale size. All the major attractions in Holland Netherlands are represented here.

Maduradam is close to The Hague. It is a fun place to go and walk through. It is a good place to start a trip. You can figure out what you want to see by coming here to Maduradam. We like to come to Maduradam to just to walk around and see the places we have been to and places we still want to see in the Netherlands.

It is amazing how exact and precise the buildings, trees, plants, animals, vehicles and people are.  They are all made at one twenty fifth of the size of the original buildings and landscapes.

The park originally opened in 1952. It has grown since then. Every time I go there I am amazed at the things that I see. One of the things that I am really amazed at is the work that it takes to keep this property up. If you imagine all of the trees and plants that have to be kept in miniature and what it requires in trimming.   They trim them 6-10 times a year to keep them small… I mean one little Bonsai tree nearly drove me insane trying to keep it trimmed and proper. Can you imagine having an entire park of little trees to keep in this miniature size to match the buildings?

A lot of the scenes in there have actions. One had a raising bridge and then the boat would go through when the bridge raised. There are cars moving down the streets, people, dogs, trains and parades all in movement. Everything that you can imagine moving around in a real city is moving around here.

Here is a little carnival that has a real moving roller coaster. It’s hilarious. We laughed and laughed. We spent a lot of time watching this one. It was fun. It had so many little moving parts and rides. It’s extremely complicated all the things that are in action. It is like looking down from Heaven at a real amusement park.

Originally Maduradam was opened as a war memorial and as a charity foundations. Now it is a major tourist attraction. Kids love it and adults love it. We have always enjoyed going to Maduradam.

I think it needs to be more publicized.  More people need to have a chance to know that it exists. It is near a lot of other things that you would go to see as a tourist in Holland. So it is an easy stop for something different and unique to see.

My husband liked playing being a giant hovering over a windmill because in real life windmills are super tall so this was just something to play with. We took pictures of him pretending to blow the paddles of the windmill and then of course he had to go to the next building and be the giant there too. We just had a blast as well as getting to see the artistry of these wonderful miniature buildings and scenes of actual places in Holland.

The park is all laid out in a little meandering pathway so as you walk down the little sidewalks and they marked in numerical order. They give you a little pamphlet at the entrance that has each of the numbers that coordinates with each numbered scene so that you know what the buildings and scenes are as you go around. You can find little green signs next to each scene with the numbers on them.

The sidewalks are marked with arrows to tell you where to go so that you stay in the patternas you walk around the park. I just couldn’t get over all the trees that they have to keep in miniature. Some of them are in bloom. They said that some of them even produce fruit. It is huge undertaking for them.

We loved the miniature water park and one of the funny things we saw a regular size duck land

in the scene. There was this large full size live duck walking in the little miniature scene. It looked really funny. It was not what you would expect to see.

Another favorite scene was a rock concert. They had a little band in there and it is playing

There were lots of little people standing around it watching it was set so that you were standing with them in the back of the scene.  It made it you want to go and sit down and join the concert. That is what you would think of doing but you are this giant with these little tiny people. It was really kind of a cool. We spent some time at this little scene. There are so many little scenes but I have my favorites. I loved the amusement park, the airport, the concert, the fire boat, the Hague, the wooden show factory, and one of my favorite places Muiden Castle.

We have a great time every time we go to Maduradam. It is one of our favorite things to see and do in Holland Netherlands. I highly recommend it to anyone that goes to Holland.

We were excited to be in Scheveningen during the time that they were having the sand sculpture festival. We got there after the sculptures had been completed. They are on display for a while. They have gates around them so no one can ruin them. It was really interesting because they can’t use the sand on the beach even though it is right there at the beach. They can’t use it because it is not sticky enough. So they haul in river sand which is a square sand so it sticks together better.

These sculptures are done by professional sculptors. They are very precise beautiful sculpture work. You can hardly believe that they are made out of sand.

This year it took 9 days to complete the sculptures. It was in honor of The World Wildlife Fund to help raise money for that. The theme was “Save Our Planet.” It is an open air exhibit. You can just go there and walk around and see them.

Originally I guess there was a sand sculptor named Gerry Kirk. He brought sand sculpting to the Netherlands in 1991 and started this festival. He tries to promote sand sculpting around the world. The sand sculptors came from The World Sand Sculpting Academy.

There was 300 tons of sand brought in to do these sculptures. You can imagine that this was quite an undertaking. The festival happens every year so check the dates and if you get a chance they are on display for a month or so after the festival. If you get a chance it is awesome to go and see the abilities of these great artists. It makes you want to build something out in the sand.

You need to have a look at some of these sand sculptures and how wonderful they are. Scheveningen is a fun place to go whether the sand sculptures are there or not. There is a beautiful long beach. There is a board walk with all kinds of things going on. There are restaurants and fast food stands. Of course there are Freetz stands and ice creams stands which were our favorites. There were sandwich shops as well as nice restaurants.

It is a great place to go set along a long beautiful beach with a long pier and a building out on the end of it. The restaurants that are out on the beach and have lounging areas. They are huge and well attended. It would be a fun place to go if you want to be part of a social crowd and see lots of people.

We had to remember that we were there in the winter time so it wasn’t very busy at the time we were there. There were very few people there during the day. I love the lounges at the restaurant. They were these huge half circle couch things that you could lay out on.  You can lounge on them and have your drink and lunch served to you while you relax and look out over the rest of the beach. It is a nice people watching area.

Like I said it is a fairly long board walk area that has restaurants and activities along it. There is a merry-go-round with a lot of people participating in that. Seeing the Merry-go-round reminded me of old movies. It you were on a board walk at the beach they also had a Merry-go-round. It is all kind of part of the ambiance of being in Scheveningen on the beach.

There is also the Sea Life museum and aquarium on the board walk.  There is even and area in the Sea Life Museum where you can touch some of the sea life.

Both Maduradam and Scheveningen are easy to find and a fun tourist attractions in the Netherlands. Enjoy these places when you go to Holland.

00:01:24.706,00:01:26.843

that I am really amazed at

.. I mean one little Bonsai tree takes

00:01:45.883,00:01:48.25

nearly drove me insane trying to keep it

00:01:48.251,00:01:50.71

00:01:56.193,00:01:58.47

to match the buildings.

00:01:58.468,00:02:01.90

and a lot of the attractions

00:02:32.648,00:02:35.81

00:02:35.806,00:02:39.34

It’s extremely complicated all the things that

00:02:39.335,00:02:42.22

00:02:42.215,00:02:44.82

Originally this was opened as a

00:02:44.815,00:02:46.95

war memorial and a charity

00:02:46.951,00:02:51.92

00:02:51.921,00:02:58.52

00:02:58.515,00:03:01.72

We have always enjoyed going to this

00:03:01.719,00:03:04.74

to this park. I think it needs to be more publicized.

00:03:04.738,00:03:08.36

More people need to have a chance to know

00:03:08.36,00:03:12.22

00:03:12.215,00:03:14.40

that you would go to see in Holland.

00:03:14.397,00:03:17.00

Here is my husband being the

00:03:16.998,00:03:19.97

giant at the windmill. Because windmills are

00:03:19.97,00:03:22.15

super tall so this was just something

00:03:22.153,00:03:24.43

to play with so he is blowing

00:03:24.428,00:03:27.08

the windmill and then of course he has to

00:03:27.076,00:03:29.54

to the next building and be the

00:03:29.537,00:03:34.04

the giant and look

00:03:34.042,00:03:36.46

look over the top of it. We just had

00:03:36.456,00:03:38.73

a blast as well as see

00:03:38.732,00:03:41.24

these wonderful miniature buildings.

00:03:41.24,00:03:45.19

It is all laid out in a little

00:03:45.187,00:03:47.60

pathway so that you can walk down the

00:03:47.602,00:03:49.83

little sidewalks and they are marked. They give you

00:03:49.831,00:03:53.87

a little pamphlet that has

00:03:53.871,00:03:56.43

each of the numbers and what the buildings are

00:03:56.426,00:03:59.12

so as you go the buildings are numbered

00:03:59.119,00:04:01.49

you can see the little green sign next to me

00:04:01.488,00:04:03.72

where the buildings are numbered and

00:04:03.717,00:04:06.27

as you go along each little scene is numbered and

00:04:06.271,00:04:08.69

and you can look in your book and see what it is

00:04:08.686,00:04:10.96

The sidewalks are marked with arrows to tell you

00:04:10.961,00:04:13.38

where to go so that you stay in the pattern

00:04:13.376,00:04:15.51

as you walk around

00:04:15.512,00:04:20.48

the park. Look at all the trees that they have to

00:04:20.481,00:04:22.71

keep in miniature. Some of them are in bloom

00:04:22.711,00:04:26.10

They said that some of them even produce fruit.

00:04:26.101,00:04:32.79

It is huge undertaking for them.

00:04:32.788,00:04:37.39

Here is a water park. One of the fun things we did

00:04:37.386,00:04:41.24

was we saw a regular size duck land

00:04:41.24,00:04:47.23

in one of these scenes. Here was this

00:04:47.231,00:04:49.83

large live duck around these little miniature

00:04:49.831,00:04:52.52

things. It looked really funny.

00:04:52.525,00:04:54.94

It was not what you would expect to see.

00:04:54.94,00:04:58.66

Here is a concert

00:04:58.655,00:05:01.35

They have a little band in there and it is playing

00:05:01.349,00:05:03.72

You have all the people and

00:05:03.717,00:05:06.88

you are standing back there watch. It made it

00:05:06.875,00:05:09.20

you want to go and sit down and join

00:05:09.197,00:05:13.56

the concert. That is what you would

00:05:13.562,00:05:16.63

think of doing but you are this giant

00:05:16.627,00:05:18.90

with these little tiny people.

00:05:18.903,00:05:24.62

It was really kind of a cool thing to do.

00:05:24.615,00:05:28.42

We spent some time at this

00:05:28.423,00:05:30.79

little scene. There are so many but I have

00:05:30.791,00:05:33.11

pick a few of my favorites. Here we are

00:05:33.113,00:05:35.90

we are waving goodbye. We have had a great

00:05:35.9,00:05:38.13

time at Maduradam.

00:05:38.129,00:05:41.10

I highly recommend it to anyone.

00:05:41.101,00:05:43.84

That goes to Holland.

00:05:43.841,00:05:46.12

We were excited to be in

00:05:46.117,00:05:51.04

Scheveningen during the time that they were

00:05:51.039,00:05:53.55

the sand sculpture festival.

00:05:53.547,00:05:56.52

We got there after they had been completed.

00:05:56.519,00:05:58.66

They are on display for a while. They have gates

00:05:58.655,00:06:00.88

around them so no one can ruin them.

00:06:00.885,00:06:03.35

It was really interesting because they can’t use

00:06:03.346,00:06:05.44

the sand on the beach even though it is right there

00:06:05.436,00:06:08.08

at the beach. They can’t use it because it is not

00:06:08.083,00:06:10.03

sticky enough. So they haul

00:06:10.033,00:06:12.26

river sand which is a square sand

00:06:12.262,00:06:14.72

so it sticks together better.

00:06:14.724,00:06:17.05

These sculptures are done by

00:06:17.046,00:06:19.37

by professional sculptors

00:06:19.368,00:06:22.15

They are very precise.

00:06:22.154,00:06:24.52

Beautiful sculpting work.

00:06:24.522,00:06:26.70

You can hardly believe that it is made out of sand.

00:06:26.705,00:06:29.35

This year it took

00:06:29.352,00:06:31.54

9 days to complete the sculptures.

00:06:31.535,00:06:33.72

There were seven sculptures.

00:06:33.718,00:06:36.36

It was in honor of The World

00:06:36.365,00:06:38.78

Wild Fund.

00:06:38.78,00:06:41.19

to help raise money

00:06:41.194,00:06:43.84

for that. The theme was

00:06:43.841,00:06:46.16

Save Our Planet.

00:06:46.163,00:06:49.97

It is an open air exhibit. You can just go there

00:06:49.972,00:06:52.57

and walk around and see them.

00:06:52.572,00:06:56.01

Originally I guess there was

00:06:56.009,00:06:58.61

a sand sculptor named Gerry Kirk

00:06:58.609,00:07:04.09

He brought sand sculpting to the Netherlands in

00:07:04.089,00:07:05.78

1991 and started this festival.

00:07:05.784,00:07:08.80

He tries to promote sand sculpting

00:07:08.803,00:07:11.17

around the world.

00:07:11.171,00:07:14.47

The sand sculptors came from The World

00:07:14.469,00:07:16.47

Sand Sculpting Academy.

00:07:16.883,00:07:20.09

There was 300 tons of sand brought

00:07:20.088,00:07:22.60

in to do these sculptures.

00:07:22.596,00:07:26.50

You can imagine that this was quite an undertaking.

00:07:26.497,00:07:31.93

The festival happens every year

00:07:31.93,00:07:34.95

so check the dates and if you get a chance

00:07:34.949,00:07:38.01

they are on display for a month or so after the

00:07:38.014,00:07:41.78

the festival. If you get a chance

00:07:41.775,00:07:44.84

it is awesome to go and see

00:07:44.84,00:07:47.86

the abilities. It makes you want to

00:07:46.644,00:07:51.41

build something out in the sand.

00:07:51.412,00:07:54.62

Have a look at some of these sand sculptures

00:07:54.616,00:07:56.89

wonderful they are. Scheveningen

00:07:56.891,00:07:59.31

is a fun place to go whether the sand

00:07:59.306,00:08:01.44

sculptures are there or not.

00:08:01.443,00:08:04.42

There is a beautiful long beach. There is a board

00:08:04.415,00:08:06.97

walk with all kinds of

00:08:06.969,00:08:09.38

things going on. There are restaurants

00:08:09.384,00:08:12.68

there are fast food stands. Of course there are Freetz

stand and ice creams stands which were our favorites

00:08:17.139,00:08:19.65

There were sandwich shops as well as nice restaurants.

00:08:19.647,00:08:22.25

It is a great place to go. Beautiful

00:08:22.248,00:08:24.90

beach with a long pier

00:08:24.895,00:08:27.45

with a building out on the end of it.

00:08:27.449,00:08:30.56

The restaurants that are out on the beach

00:08:30.56,00:08:33.62

have lounging areas

00:08:34.133,00:08:38.59

They are huge and well attended.

00:08:38.594,00:08:41.29

It would be a fun place to go if you want a social

00:08:41.288,00:08:43.56

crowd. See lots of people

00:08:43.564,00:08:46.95

Remembering that we were there in the winter time

00:08:46.954,00:08:49.37

so it wasn’t very busy at the time we were there.

00:08:49.369,00:08:52.06

There were a few people there during the day.

00:08:52.062,00:08:56.34

I love the lounges. They were

00:08:56.335,00:08:59.07

these huge half circle

00:08:59.074,00:09:03.49

couch things that you could lay out on.

00:09:03.486,00:09:06.60

There they are

00:09:06.598,00:09:08.87

You would have your drink and your

00:09:08.873,00:09:11.61

lunch served to you there and look out

00:09:11.613,00:09:13.80

out over the rest of the beach and watch the

00:09:13.796,00:09:16.07

people. It is a nice people watching

00:09:16.071,00:09:18.76

area. Like I said a fairly long

00:09:18.765,00:09:21.09

board walk area that has

00:09:21.087,00:09:23.32

restaurants and things on it.

00:09:23.316,00:09:26.38

There is also a

00:09:26.381,00:09:30.47

area for people

00:09:30.468,00:09:33.25

to kind of play. There is a merry-go-round there

00:09:33.254,00:09:36.46

There was lots of people participating in that.

00:09:36.459,00:09:40.03

Seeing the Merry-go-round reminds you

00:09:40.034,00:09:43.84

being on a board walk on a beach. It is all kind of

00:09:43.843,00:09:47.23

part of the ambiance of being

00:09:47.233,00:09:50.30

in Scheveningen and on this board walk.

00:09:50.298,00:09:53.08

with the beach. There is also the Sea Life

00:09:53.084,00:09:56.34

museum there. It is a

00:09:55.2,00:09:59.26

It is a sea life aquarium.

00:09:59.261,00:10:02.14

where you can go. There is even

00:10:02.14,00:10:04.93

touching some of the sea life animals.

00:10:04.926,00:10:08.73

That is another fun destination all there

00:10:08.734,00:10:13.56

on the board walk of Scheveningen Beach.

00:10:13.564,00:10:16.91

Easy to find and a fun place to go.

00:10:16.908,00:10:19.51

Enjoy these places when you go to Holland.
